I used devil's food chocolate cake mix and brown colored cones (they are not chocolate flavored, as some have asked.) While the cone cakes were in the oven, I began mixing the icing.
I want to point out one note of caution. If you put chocolate chips in the icing (the last step in the recipe) - you will not be able to pipe the icing using a piping tip. I learned the hard way (then was like, duh!) The chips clog the tip. If you plan to use a piping tip, keep the chips out of the icing and sprinkle them on top, as shown in the photos.
